Friday Art Lesson

Mr. Jones taught us how to draw a crab.
He taught us how to draw Mr. Krabs from "Sponge Bob."

They are drawing Sponge Bob. They drew Mr. Krabs first.

We used shapes to make Mr. Krabs.
Sponge Bob has a helmet on so he can go into Sandy's house.

Mr. Jones is an artist.

They are listening for the directions.

M.W. made an awesome Mr. Krabs!

Today we had fun drawing characters from "Sponge Bob."

Too Cool! Aurasma Interactive Book Reports

The last week of school my class wrote a report about their favorite book of the year. I recorded them reading their reports. I used the videos with an unbelievable new app to create "augmented reality" interactive book reports.  We set up a quick display the last week of school to share their work with other classes.  I put an invitation into each teacher's mailbox and invited them to bring their class to view our interactive reports.  There was much excitement about what they saw when they used our class ipads to view the display.

If you want to view what the school saw you need to follow these simple directions...
1) Download the free app called Aurasma
2) Search for room19 (no space) using the magnifying glass icon at the screen bottom.
3) Choose to follow.
4) At the bottom of your screen touch the 4 cornered box icon.
5) Hold this up over one of the book covers below and watch what happens.( I have noticed when I begin following others using Aurasma it takes about 30 seconds for my i-device to recognize the first picture.)
6) You might have to move your ipad or iphone in and out a bit so it can focus on the image.
Tip-A moving swirl will begin to appear if you have followed the above steps correctly.

If you want to know more here is an interesting TED talk about Aursama.

Sea of Helmets

Our principal received a safe schools grant and used part of it to purchase bike helmets for all our students.
We had a team come in and properly fit each helmet on each student.  The excitement was very high as class after class paraded by wearing their newly fitted helmets.  Everyone met on the playground at the end of the day to have a school wide photo snapped of everyone wearing their helmets.  I just couldn't resist getting a photo of all the colors, shapes, and sizes as I stood there.

The Spring Fling Thing Day

The Spring Fling Thing Day
by Room 19's Students

Spring Fling Thing Day is a special day.  It is special because we got to go to different stations today.  They all had something to do with spring.
We got to put sentences into order.  That was the "Sentence Jumble" station.  We got to string spring eggs.  That was the "Egg Stringing" station.  We got to circle verbs on a paper  that we saw our partners do while blowing bubbles. That was the "Verb Bubbles" station.  We found eggs with our sight words on them outside on the playground.  That was called the "Word Egg" station. We wrote sight words on the playground with chalk in the "Chalk Word" station. We read spring books in the "Spring Reading" station.
We had fun writing on the ground with the chalk. We had a lot of fun hunting for the word eggs, too.  Everybody got to do all the stations and they were fun!  We all had FUN going to all the stations!!

Chinese Acrobats Come to Visit

Chinese Acrobats
by Room 19

Chinese acrobats came to McKinley School. They juggled, twirled plates on sticks, and rode on unicycles doing tricks, and someone was flipping masks quickly while dancing.
First, one of the men juggled hats. He would wear one, take it off and throw it up while juggling. He did a cartwheel while juggling and the hat he was juggling landed on his head.

Next, two girls rode unicycles. They balanced bowls on their heads while they rode the unicycles. They were kicking the bowls and trying to get them to land on their head but they dropped one. The girl picked it up and tried again. She finally did it. At the end they stopped and got off their unicycles.

Then, the girls were spinning plates on sticks and none of the plates fell.  They rolled backwards while balancing them.  None of the plates fell.  They spun the plates while keeping their arms up.  They moved their arms in different ways and still the plates did not fall.

Also, we saw girls with Chinese yo-yos.  They threw the yo-yos to each other. They caught them on the strings.  The girls were throwing the yo-yos up into the air. They went as high as the ceiling and when they came down the girls caught them.

Finally, a man came out wearing a mask and a cape.  He frightened our principal and a kindergartener. When he shook our teacher’s hand he changed his mask without using his hands.  It looked like the mask changed just by the turning of his head.  Mrs. Settle jumped in surprise when the mask changed right before her eyes!  The mask was red and then turned into a green mask.  Sometimes the mask was the face of a cat, the face of a bunny, a clown, or it was black, white, pink or blue.  At the end we saw the man’s real face.

We thought this was a good show.  It was fun to watch.  It had funny parts in the show.  We are glad the Chinese acrobats came to McKinley School!

Reading Our Shadow Narratives

We read several stories about shadows before Groundhog's Day.  We read a readers theater about shadows that we posted on here.  We just started writing narratives and wrote one about our shadows.  We learned about using transition words to connect our ideas together and added those to our narratives.  We hope you enjoy our work!
