Art Week Continues 2

Today we used our art books to sketch some pictures.  Students choose their own book to follow step-by-step directions to end up with a picture of their choice.  After finishing their sketch, students have to write a short narrative about their picture.  They must include a character, setting, problem, solution and conclusion.  I had one student finish in 20 minutes.  She will begin adding more details to her picture and color it tomorrow.  The rest of the class is still in this process and will complete it tomorrow, also.

Yesterday we discussed Vincent van Gogh and his painting “Starry Night.”

Some students had noticed a painting by Mary Cassat.  Today we talked about how she used pastels as her “medium” for creating her pictures.  We will be working in pastels in the next 2 weeks to create our own art for our gallery in the hallways.
We were using different shapes to combine and compose new shapes in our math book today.  After completing our lesson we made animals with our shape blocks.  We combined shapes to compose animals.  The students sure did like this activity.  They needed to “slide, rotate, and flip” the shapes to make their animal puzzle work.

We learned “The Dot Song” since we are reading that story this week.  We have the lyrics to read long with the music.  Tomorrow we will begin adding movements with the song.  We hope to preform it for their parents at the end of our art adventures.
